APC: Group backs direct primary, says it’s turn of Osun West, Iwo
A GROUP within the All Progressives Congress , APC, in Osun State, the Integrity Group, has thrown its weight behind the position of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party on the conduct of the governorship primary election in the state through direct primary. The chairman of the group, Dr Precious Ekundayo, in a statement, yesterday, declared that the direct primary system would create a sense of belonging for all members and ensure a free and fair primary. He said the system will also lead to the emergence of the best candidate for the party, stressing that “any of the 17 aspirants, who emerge at the end of the direct primary election will be the best person who can lead our great party to victory in the September 22 governorship poll.” Also, Ekudayo, who claimed that it was the turn of Osun West Senatorial District to produce the governor, stated that the next governor of the state must come from Iwo federal constituency in the spirit of fairness and democracy. He said: “There are three federal constituencies in Osun West Senatorial District: Iwo, Ede and Ikire. Aside Iwo, which produced senator once, the other two constituencies had produced many political office holders including Ministers, senators, Deputy Governors and other positions. “It is only Iwo federal constituency that has not produced a governor, deputy governor, minister or Federal Board member in the last 19 years of our democracy. It is therefore fair and just to zone the governorship position to the federal constituency, which comprises of Iwo, Ayedire and Olaoluwa Local Government Areas.” Ekundayo urged the leaders of the party in the state to also consider religion in choosing the party’s flagbearer, noting that out of the three civilian governors that the state has produced, only one of them is a christian.
