Police arrest security guard for thug’s death in Ondo
The Ondo State Police Command, on Wednesday, said it had arrested a security guard, Abdullahi Jimoh, in connection with the death of one Kayode Are at the Italugbogbo area of Ondo town.
The corpse of the 44-year-old Are was said to have been found in a septic tank on a piece of land in the community on February 28, 2019.
A source in the area described the deceased as a notorious thug and a member of a gang that had been terrorising the community.
According to the source, the deceased was fond of extorting money from landowners whenever they wanted to commence construction works on their plots of land in the community.
“It was the owner of the land who saw the corpse and reported the matter to the police, but no one in the community knew how he actually died,” the source stated.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Mr Femi Joseph, said the security guard was in custody and that investigation into the case had commenced.
Joseph stated, “The suspect is a security guard on the land, while the deceased was a known thug in the area. During interrogation, the suspect told us that the deceased and two others went to the land to extort money and engaged in a fight with him, because he prevented them from operating.
“He told us that the deceased and the other two were struggling with him to collect his locally-made gun, adding that it was in the process that one of the thugs pulled the trigger of the gun and killed the deceased.”
The PPRO added that the other two members of the gang that accompanied Are to the scene ran away and the police were on their trail.
